The film that mesmerized fashionistas everywhere is out on DVD!
Valentino The Last Emperor chronicles the moments leading up to Valentino’s resignation from the company he founded in 1965. The documentary unapologetically shows Valentino to be eccentric (he travels everywhere with his 5 pugs in tow), passionate, intelligent and impossible. At one point in the film Valentino and his partner of nearly 50 years, Giancarlo Giametti, begin to argue. Giancarlo points out that the cameras are on them. Valentino ardently exclaims that he doesn’t care and continues on arguing anyway! A candid look like that into a legend’s life is hard to come by.
The name Valentino will forever be synonymous with not only fashion but the entire luxury goods industry. An icon of style, he dressed everyone from Jackie O to Julia Roberts. It is astonishing to think that someone who has reached such caliber of greatness is still walking amongst us. Valentino is one of the few who have; a legend in his own lifetime.
“A lot of people say no one can replace you,” said a reporter to Valentino. He responded with a laugh, “Apres moi, le deluge.” Translation: After me, the flood.
